A monthly five-minute walk-around — oil, coolant, screenwash, tyres, lights — catches most problems while they are cheap and keeps the NCT boring. No tools, no expertise: just eyes, a tyre gauge and the habit.

Engine cold, on level ground: pull the dipstick, wipe, re-dip and read — oil between the marks, topped with the right grade if low (the handbook or filler cap says which). Eye the coolant level against its min/max lines on the reservoir — never open a hot system. Fill the screenwash properly with washer fluid, not just water. Check tyre pressures against the placard in the door shute (including the spare, the forgotten one), and read the tread — the legal minimum is 1.6mm, and the wear bars in the grooves tell you when you are approaching it. Finish with a lights walk-around: everything on, walk the car, brake lights against a wall or a helper.
Reading the warnings
Dashboard lights triage simply: red means stop safely and deal with it now — oil pressure, temperature, brakes, charging — driving on is how small failures total engines. Amber means book it soon and drive gently meanwhile: engine management, DPF, tyre-pressure warnings. A light that comes on and goes off still happened — mention it at the next service. And new noises are data: squeals, knocks and grinding are always cheaper the week they start than the month they are ignored.
Seasonal sense
Winter: battery age tells (slow cranking on cold mornings is the warning), washer fluid at winter strength, tyres actually gripping — tread and pressure matter most exactly when the road is worst. Summer holidays: check everything before the long run, not after the hard shoulder — coolant, oil, tyres including the spare, and the toll of a loaded car on pressures (the placard lists laden figures). Wiper blades streaking? They are minutes and small money to change, and Irish rain makes them safety equipment.
