Home Guides European breakdown cover, explained before you sail
Car ownership · IrelandEuropean breakdown cover, explained before you sail
At home a breakdown is an inconvenience; abroad it can strand the car in another country. European cover is really three products — roadside help, onward travel, and repatriation of the car — and repatriation is the one worth reading twice.
What the products actually are
European breakdown cover bundles some or all of: local roadside assistance and tow in the country you break down, onward travel (hire car, accommodation while yours is fixed), and repatriation — getting a car that cannot be fixed locally back to Ireland. Sources include Irish and UK motoring organisations’ European products, travel add-ons from insurers, and per-trip policies. The cheap ones typically carry the thinnest repatriation terms — and repatriation is the expensive risk.
The continental wrinkles
On many European motorways — France’s autoroutes are the famous case — you cannot simply summon your own recovery operator to a live carriageway: official or franchised recovery attends first, at regulated rates, and your cover reimburses rather than dispatches. Know this before you stand on a hard shoulder wondering why your provider is asking you to ring the orange emergency phone. Off-motorway, cover works more like home: assistance dispatched or reimbursed per the policy.
Choosing without the fog
Read three clauses before price: vehicle age and condition exclusions (older cars are routinely excluded from repatriation), the repatriation trigger and cap (when do they bring it home, and up to what cost), and trip duration limits. Then be honest about your car: a well-maintained car with a pre-trip garage check is the cheapest breakdown cover there is, and the combination of that check plus a mid-range policy usually beats a premium policy on a neglected car.

Frequently asked questions
Is European breakdown cover worth it?
For a continental road trip, usually — the repatriation risk alone (a car stuck abroad needing transport home) can dwarf years of premiums. Read the repatriation clause and the vehicle-age exclusions before choosing on price.
Can my Irish recovery arrangement help me in France?
Not on the autoroute itself — official/franchised recovery attends motorway breakdowns at regulated rates, and policies reimburse. Your Irish arrangements matter again once the car is off the carriageway or you are off-motorway.
What gets cars excluded from cover?
Age caps, pre-existing faults, and poor maintenance are the classic exclusions, especially for repatriation. A documented pre-trip check protects both the trip and any claim conversation afterwards.
