NCT: every question, answered honestly

Ireland’s mandatory roadworthiness test for cars, run by NCTS. First test at four years old, then on a fixed cycle. It checks brakes, suspension, lights, emissions, tyres, structure and more against national standards.

You receive a fail sheet listing each item. Repair them — at any garage, not only near the centre — and return for the retest within the stated window. Most fails are ordinary garage work.

A fail alone does not ban the car, but driving without a valid certificate when due is an offence, and a fail marked DANGEROUS should not be driven at all — recover it to the garage instead.

The recheck of your failed items. Lane retests (brakes, emissions and similar) carry the retest fee — €28 at the time of writing; minor visual rechecks are free. Confirm on ncts.ie.

Whatever the fail sheet says, priced as ordinary repairs: a bulb-and-aim fail is small; discs, suspension arms or DPF work is more. Send the exact fail lines to local garages for real quotes.

Exhaust readings outside limits — from overdue servicing and short-trip driving to sensors, coils or DPF condition. Diagnose rather than guess; arrive at the retest warmed up.

Uneven braking measured between wheels on an axle — commonly a sticking caliper, contaminated pads or a failing hose. Measured on rollers, fixed by any competent garage, verifiable before the retest.

The shaker plates or visual check found worn dampers, springs, bushes or links. It matters because suspension is braking and stability, and it is quotable directly from the sheet.

Aim, bulbs, lenses or washers — the most common and cheapest category. Headlamp aim set on a beam-setter is minutes; walk the car with everything lit before any test.
