The rules that still apply
Novice drivers display N plates for two years from the first full licence and live under a lower penalty-point disqualification threshold than established drivers — a threshold low enough that a couple of ordinary mistakes matter. Treat the novice period as probation with consequences: speed detection, phone use and insurance conditions all bite harder when your ceiling is lower.
The skills you legally could not practise
Your learner permit banned motorways, so as a new full licence holder you have never merged at speed — book one motorway lesson with an ADI and learn slip-road acceleration, lane discipline and safe following at national speeds with an expert alongside. Night, heavy rain and long solo journeys are also newly unsupervised: build them up deliberately rather than all at once on a bank-holiday weekend.

Tell your insurer you passed — your status has changed and cover conditions may too. Requote every renewal anyway; loyalty is the most expensive habit in Irish insurance.
