What the tester is marking
Grade-2 and grade-3 faults across observation, position, progress, and control. Most fails are accumulations — repeated mirror misses, hesitation at junctions — rather than one disaster. Drive decisively, look convincingly, and narrate mentally: see it, mirror it, signal it, do it.
The weeks before
Book a pre-test lesson or two with an ADI who knows your centre; drive the surrounding roads at test times of day; drill the manoeuvres until they bore you; and fix the car’s test-day basics early — lights, tyres, L plates, NCT and insurance disc in date. A car that fails its own inspection cancels the test.
On the day
Arrive early with paperwork sorted. Nerves narrow vision — deliberately widen your scanning. One mistake is not a fail: recover, keep driving, and let the tester see composure. If it goes wrong, the report is a study plan, not a verdict on you.

What fails most driving tests?
Observation faults — mirrors, junctions, moving off — accumulated across the drive. It is rarely the reverse around the corner; it is the looking.
Should the test car be the lesson car?
Whichever car you are most consistent in, legally equipped and insured for the test. Many learners use the instructor’s dual-control car for calm; either is fine.
How do I check my own car is test-ready?
NCT (where due), tax and insurance in date and displayed, L plates, working lights, legal tyres, no warning lights. A local garage will check it over quickly — cheaper than a cancelled test.
