How your rate is decided
Cars first registered from July 2008 are taxed on CO2 emissions (the newest on the WLTP scale); older cars on engine size (cc). The practical move: check the exact rate for any car you are considering on motortax.ie — two similar-looking cars can carry very different bands.
Paying and displaying
Tax online at motortax.ie (you will need the reg and PIN from your renewal notice or logbook process), choose 3, 6 or 12 months — longer periods cost less per month — and display the disc. Driving untaxed collects fines and, persistently, worse.
Buying, selling and off-the-road
Change of ownership triggers the tax responsibility to the new owner. A car genuinely off the road must be declared off the road IN ADVANCE with a RF150 declaration — retrospective "it was in the shed" no longer works.

Different systems: the old car is taxed on engine size, the new one on (often low) CO2. Always look up the actual band for the actual reg.

The motor tax process requires the insurance details to be declared. Insurance first, then tax, then drive.
What if I forgot to declare off-the-road?
Arrears apply — the advance-declaration rule closed the retrospective loophole. Declare before the gap, not after.
